Chromatic or Melodic runs are a great way to spice up your banjo playing.  Here is a simple run that you can use to gain the understanding of how it works.

Here is a technique of playing that can be useful in backup and lead playing.  The trick is to use the first and third finger to hold the main part of the chord so that the middle and pinky fingers can work to other notes.
