 Mandolin / Fiddle

In the key of "A"

There is section that can be played in almost every mandolin and fiddle break. In the example I have used a section from Alison Krauss and Union Station called "Tiny Broken Heart" featuring Dan Tyminski. I cannot say enough about that group; buy everything that they have.  The sound example has some playing before and after what you are to learn.  Listen to the section in the middle.  Generally, what is done on a mandolin can also be done on a fiddle.

Trying to Work the Bugs Out of That Instrument

In the recent past, it was discovered that many of the world’s books were being lost to paper eating bugs.  This epidemic was discovered after some very old documents were given to Yale University.  The job of solving the problem was given to Charles Remington, a professor of the college.  Remington needed a process to kill the insects without damaging the property.  Remington found that freezing the literature at 40◦  below zero for 72 hours worked well and the idea caught on at other locations as well.  Many organizations are now using freezers as a standard method of storing and maintaining their historical and valuable collections.  Yale also froze a Stradivarius violin that was infested with bugs.
