Build a Bluebird House

I never really watched birds until I was pregnant and on maternity leave with my first child. About 2 weeks prior to my son’s birth, my husband built a birdhouse and a feeder and placed it in a flower and vegetable garden just outside our kitchen window. I had never stayed at home during the day and I was rather lonesome. Each morning as I sat at the breakfast table reading my paper and sipping coffee, I would watch the birds. There were so many different species! I could not believe my eyes, as every day seemed to bring a new visitor to our garden. The birds lifted my spirits. Once my son was born, I would sit in front of the window to feed him and play with him while still enjoying our new friends. As he grew, he enjoyed the birds as well, and that window became the center of attention when we sat together for mealtime. It has been 9 years, 2 children, and 3 homes since my first real encounter with my feathered friends, and I am just as thrilled and amazed to watch them now, as I did then. My husband, my children, and myself anticipate the arrival each spring of the new families that will come to live with us.

To me, there is not a more beautiful bird than the bluebird that has ever visited my home.  I have several bird houses in my yard and my blue bird house is my favorite.  I have seen many little bluebird babies hatch, grow  and leave.  I all happens so fast, much like my own kids.  They grow so fast.  Of all of my woodworking projects, I like to build the bluebird houses the most.  Maybe it is the smell of the cedar wood or maybe I imagine being a little bird inside, cozy and warm out of  the rain.  I enjoy providing for my kids and in some since, doing the same for a family of little birds.  It would be nice to have a back yard full of these houses except bluebirds are territorial and you usually get only one family per yard.  Other small birds will live in this house as well if you will let them.  Sometimes you will get bluebirds the first time but you never know.  You can look inside as the nest is being built and if it is a clean, neat little nest, you most likely have bluebirds.  If it is messy with trash it is likely not blue birds.

Bluebird House Plans

This bird house is made of cedar and the post is made from galvanized pipe.  This house is made to be opened and cleaned.  There are many designs and the internet is full of them.  I sell plans for $9.95 and they can be ordered at the bottom of the page.  Instructions are included on  how and where to mount your house to get the most out of it.  You'll be able to open the house while you have birds in it to check their progress as well as be able to determine from the nest and the eggs what species of birds living there.  I'll explain how to build and use templates so you can build birdhouses in volume.  You will see how to get the most out of your material as well as learn shortcuts that will help.  These prints offer many views to provide a clear understanding of its composition.  Within each print is easy to follow text that will lead you through the entire project.  If you can cut a straight line and drill a hole, you will have no problem building this project.

It is very important to check the living conditions of your resident birds to ensure clean, healthy, nesting conditions.  If the house gets infested with insects it can be deadly for the baby birds.                                                                                     BUILD A BLUEBIRD HOUSE

This bird feeder will give you many hours of bird watching enjoyment.  It's simple to build and sure to be a family favorite.  Most likely you have enough scrap lumber laying around the shop to build it.  The holes you see are only about one inch deep so the food mixture can be packed into it.  The post is a piece of electrical conduit with a bend.  Click the picture and take a closer look.  The  recipe for a nutty mixture to put in it is a mixture of peanut butter, corn meal, and maple syrup.  Make it into a paste and pack the holes.  Once the birds taste it, you will not be able to make enough.  I have also included instructions on how to make the stand in which to hang your feeder.  These plans come free with the purchase of the bluebird plans.                                                       Bluebird house plans
