How to Build a Website

Why do I need one?                                                          How to Build a Website
You might not, but if you have a business there is no better way to advertise.  Also, it is the cheapest way to start a business.  It's a great way to share your ideas and information with others who can use it.  It provides a fun way to stay home and not be out on the town spending money.  The internet contains so much information that it's easy to bring some of it together and incorporate it with your own information, to create a unique site.  You can create a website at zero to very little cost, or with an extravagant price depending on how exorbitant you would like it to be.
How ?                                                                               How to Build a Website
Everyone will tell you that it has to be done their way.  Website designers will promise you the world with a BIG price tag.  When I decided to have a site built I went to a web designing firm. They were going to charge me $250 per page and they suggested I begin with at least four pages.  That kind of money was going to be hard to come across but I knew it would be worth it.  So I went home to gather up my information to give them and when my wife found out how much they were going to charge , she said "no problem" I'll pay for it using your life insurance money!  That was all that I had to hear, and I decided there must be a "safer" way to get this done.  Well, here is the funny part!  I typed my information into Microsoft Word  to get an idea of what I wanted it to look like.  I inserted some pictures and it started to look  like a website.  I thought to myself, it would be nice if this could be my site. I clicked around and saw something called a hyperlink.  Now I am thinking, this looks like something to do with the internet!  I would bet that the designers would not have wanted for me to have seen that.  I looked around and found that I have a program called Microsoft FrontPage.  It said that this program was for building  websites.

Here is how Easy it was!                                                    How to Build a Website
I highlighted everything in Word and clicked "copy." I opened Front page and clicked "paste".  SHAZZAM!!!  It was a website.  I saved it as a file and clicked "preview in browser" and explorer opened it up and it looked pretty good. I went to "view" and "source" and up popped my site in html code.  I said, "did I do that?  I must be smart!"  That was the code that people told me that I must learn in order  to create my site.  Look at my site, I still cannot write code.  Everything is done in FrontPage.  If you practice this, you will see how other sites are designed.

A few Tips

To keep text and pictures in place, you must use "tables" (rectangles).  You can choose whether to see them of not.  If you have noticed, the words that you are reading are not in squares like the text above.  That is because I set the table properties to zero, the ones up top are set at two.

Try this neat trick

Find a picture that you like on the internet.  Left click and drag across it until it turns green (this will take a little practice).  Right click and copy.  Open a new document in one of your own programs.  Right click and paste.  There it is.  Be careful about copyright laws.  The way I do it is if I copy something I use it as a link back to the site where I got it.    Another way to learn new design ideas is to open a page from the web in MS FrontPage and change it around to suit you.  It will not change the one on the web, it will be changed only in your computer.  If you like the layout, copy it and replace the text with your own.

The table below is set on five.  You can change colors & fonts, Bold, italicize and underline.

Split them up. Change fonts Resize

Color

Emphasize

Create another page and hyperlink them together.

Size your tables and pictures just by clicking and dragging.

Templates are available so you can add your information in them if you want to use them.

There are all kinds of things on the internet that you can use for free.  If you find something that you like, you can copy and paste it into your page.  Be careful of copyrighted material.  It is ALWAYS a good idea to ask permission to use someone else's materials &/or ideas!  Wouldn't you expect the same courtesy?

Other things

FrontPage has a good publishing program but you will want to use a FTP program as well.  Download a Ws_FTP program for free at www.download.com.  This will enable you to transfer one file at a time if you want.  I use one all of the time.

How much will it cost for hosting?   I started out with the local internet company with my website.  It was going to cost $40 per month for the hosting and an additional $20 to take credit cards. There were several fees once a year.  I was wondering how I was going to pay all of the fees, not knowing if I will ever make any money.  Then I found "No Monthly Fees".  It cost $200 one time and only the domain fee once a year.  Do the math.  10 months would pay for a life time of hosting and more.  Now  I pay $.00 per month and I am still here.  They advertise "and we answer our phone"  and they do!  I tested it, and they provided quick , convenient, human customer service from sales to technical support.  The local company didn't and the sales department  always seem to be on vacation.

There are many things (URLs, pictures, etc.) that are on the web to help you that are free.  Create your own page somewhere in your computer just like this one that you can copy and paste hyperlinks for your own use.  If you find a site that you want to remember, highlight the logo or URL and copy & paste!.  When you are on the internet you can click on them and they will work as a link to the site.
Consider this!   A website is like a billboard or a store front.  If you are located in the desert, surrounded by sand and there are no roads passing your store, how much business will you do?  Now if your store is located in the middle of a 10 lane super highway and all of the traffic has to go by it, then how much business might you do? How much would your advertising space be worth?  Look at some of the weather sites.  How much weather do they sell?  There must be a reason that they exist.  Look around their sites and you will see advertisements.  There must be some connection here?  Let's see,  everyone goes to them to check the weather, they sell nothing.  Do you get the picture yet?  Ask yourself,  what can I share with other people to make them come to my site?  Try it!  Arrange as much information as you can on a subject that people need or want and tell them where to get it.  If a lot of people come to you, then your space will be worth something.  The key to success in any business is marketing!  Try to understand what people want and how to get it to them and  I hope you make a million dollars doing it.  If you do, let me know.  Good luck!
Now for the real world!  Having a website that can reach almost everyone at any time is not what it is cracked up to be.  The "get rich quick" game is as hard on the net as off.  You can have the best website in the world and if you can't get it in front of people, then you have nothing.  Search engines are not much help when you are competing with millions of other sites using the same search word.  People will be after you to buy their internet tools that you don't need.  If there is a fortune to be made, it might be selling picks and shovels to the gold miners.  There is web design you can do yourself and search engine software to list your site, which you shouldn't trust.  You should list with the search engines yourself.  Some companies say that they will list your site at over 2000 search engines.  Can you name 15?  Turns out that a lot of these "search engines" are classified adds that are never seen and there is no guarantee that they will ever go in.  Take credit cards!  It cost around $20 per month and if your site is not seen you just have a bill.  The only deal that I have found is NoMonthlyFees (above) for hosting but if you use your free space with your internet provider, you will not need that.  The only thing is that if you have your own domain then people can remember your address.  I use MS FrontPage for my programming, it is worth the money.  Think it through and take your time.  Don't be taken in by what you see and hear that sounds to good to be true.  If a service is legitimate and provides real results, you can bet it won't be free, what would be the point to the person offering it?

I use PayPal to take credit cards and it is free.  They do take a small percentage of the sale when it is used.
